Chateau Pesquié - Quintessence, Ventoux, France (2018)
This cuvée of 80% Syrah and 20% Grenache opens with notes of cassis and dark chocolate and is followed by a savoury herbaceous lift. The mouth is long and silky, with pepper and licorice notes. A rich and satisfying wine with an elegance that is showing now and will continue to develop for years.
Château Pesquié is a pioneering estate in the Côtes de Ventoux AOC, an appellation in the Rhône Valley established in 1973 that sits beneath Mont de Ventoux. Sustainably farmed since the 1980s, the estate moved to fully organic methods in the early 2000s. From 50+ year-old vines, Syrah and Grenache were hand harvested, destemmed and crushed and underwent a natural yeast fermentation in tank with a 21-day maceration on the skins. The wine was aged for 18 months in French oak barrels (50% new).
