Like the vines, the Marchand and the Grillot families are both well rooted into the Burgundian soil. Both families go back seven generations, at Morey St Denis for the Marchands, and the Grillots at Gevrey-Chambertin. It was in 1950, thanks to a marriage, that the Domaine Marchand-Grillot was created.
Etienne is now largely in control taking over the responsibilities from his father Jacques. Etienne studied at the Lycée viticole at Macon-Davayé and with vinegrowers in Oregon.
The aim of the Marchand-Grillot family has always been to create traditional style wines, respecting the varietal Pinot Noir, and the terroir, in the vineyard and in the winery. Four different parcels make up the cuvée; Herbiottes, Bras, Cognée, and Porroux.
Vines are between 20 and 50 years old. Soil is very stony, brown limestone farmed organically. In the winery, grapes are typically de-stemmed, little sulphates are used and the wines typically age in 30% new wood and racked into progressively older barrels.
