La Lecciaia - Sangiovese Toscana, IGT, Italy (2015)
Ruby red in colour, with slight garnet tinges (typical of Sangiovese). Earthy aromas of wild berries and blackberry, with floral notes of herbs, mocha and baking spices. Medium- to full-bodied, and rich on the palate. Smooth tannins, with a long finish. It may need a few minutes to open up.
This wine is made from 100% Sangiovese grapes sourced from estate vineyards in Montalcino, the source of the famous Brunello di Montalcino. The soils are light and stony, and well-draining, and the planting density is medium using traditional Spurred Cordon trellising.
The grapes were hand-harvested in late September, early October, when the reached peak ripeness and maturity. Vinification was in temperature-controlled, stainless-steel tanks for 15-20 days, then aged for a minimum of 18 months in large Slavonian oak casks, then in bottle until released to the market.
