Loïc Mahé - Sables & Schistes - Chenin Blanc, Savennieres, France (2019)

Classic wet wool, dried lemon peel, white peach, quince and slightly bruised apples. The texture of the wine is incredible, a full body with a lot of weight on the palate. The wine has taut acidity providing tension to the broad mouthfeel and a saline finish. The black schist soils really define the feel of the wine, it feels very angular and when first opened, very austere. This needs decanting and time in contact with the air to open up and reveal its aromas and flavours.    

Under the radar producer in the premium Loire Valley appellation of Savennières - this powerful Chenin overdelivers. While the grapes for this wine are sourced from outside of the Savennières itself, it has the taste but not the price tag of its illustrious homebase. 

Loïc draws a lot of inspiration (and mentorship) from infamous biodynamic producer Nicolas Joly...this is a must buy.
