The Great Toronto Stork Derby started when a rich Toronto lawyer and financier, Charles Vance Millar died in 1926. With no children or close relatives to leave his fortune to, he composed a peculiarly outlandish last will and testament. Of the many clauses contained in his will – for instance leaving hundreds of thousands of dollars in O’Keefe brewery stock to six protestant ministers who supported prohibition – the most controversial was awarding the rest of his fortune to the Toronto woman who gave birth to the most children over the next decade. No one is quite sure why, possibly just an elaborate practical joke or a way of ridiculing the provincial law banning birth control, the “Derby” had many Depression era families vying for the prize money. In the end, with many criticisms and legal challenges, the money was split evenly between four mothers, each giving birth to 9 babies over 10 years.
