A 3-day skin contact was followed by 20 months aging on lees in 1,000 litre oak füder providing a lot of weight and texture to the body. Notes of prickly pear, lemon curd, cactus and bone dry. Typical Mosel, steel-y acidity provides a persistent and refreshing finish.

Ulrich ‘Ulli’ Stein is a renowned proponent of the German natural wine world, an environment that is challenging to farm without chemical interventions given persistent rain, cold weather and consequent threat of mildew and pests! But Stein is a real talent and crafts exceptional wines that deliver exceptional expressions of Mosel Riesling.

The Stein estate includes a large collection of very old vines, including many ungrafted vines, around 10% of all the ungrafted vines in Germany. Many of these wines are planted in extremely steep sites, even by Mosel standards. These parcels are largely unknown commercially and incredibly difficult to work, which has made them a difficult proposition financially. However, these sites are essential to the future of the Mosel, as the better known lower slopes of the region struggle with excessive ripeness in the face of climate change. As well, the importance of old vines is increasing in times of climate change.
