Weingut Dr. Heger is named after Joachim Heger’s grandfather who founded the winery in 1935 in Baden. It is now run by Joachim and his wife Silvia. The estate is based in the warm volcanic hills of the Kaiserstühl. They are best known for their Spätburgunder, but there are many other varieties planted including Grauburgunder, Weißburgunder, Riesling, and Sylvaner. The estate also has 70-year-old Muskateller vines that make a dry and intensely aromatic wine. Vines are farmed without herbicides or pesticides and some of the vineyards are horse plowed.

While this is one of the warmest spots in Germany for Spätburgunder, the Heger’s wines maintain incredible elegance. The fruit is destemmed and sees a cold soak. The style is floral, aromatic, sappy, and layered.
