Domaine Derey - Gevrey Chambertin, Bourgogne, France (2021)
TASTING NOTES
A rich assortment of red & black fruit with a perfume of roses, baking spices and black pepper. Gevrey Chambertin can always be relied to provide firm tannins, which while definitely evident, are counterbalanced by a shimmering minerality & elegance. A lovely village wine from a top, somewhat under the radar producer.

This comes from Craite-Paille - quite sandy soils at the bottom of the village by La Justice. While not the best Gevrey terroir, Derey coax maximum life and energy out of their vines & wines - meaning this really over performs. Manual harvesting, 60% whole clusters with 18 months in 25% new oak barrels.
In 2020, Derey Frères took the first steps to become a fully organic operation. This is a three-year process, in which the estate will put in place new methods to better protect the natural environment - from the vineyards to the winery. The end goal is a combination of “organic farming and common sense”, and a better relationship between the industry and the environment. This will culminate with the 2023 vintage, which will be the first to be fully certified as organic. The HVE (High Environmental Value) certification is the first step in the process.
