Groiss - GemischterSatz, Weinvertel, Austria (2022)
TASTING NOTES
A dry herbal white with persistence and a salty, savoury edge. Refreshing with apple, citrus, sweet peas, green fruit and kaffir lime leaf. Really vibrant, light on its feet and mineral-driven.

A true field blend! About 15 varieties planted in a single plot, planted in 1951 by Ingrid’s grandmother, all co-fermented, within the great Weinviertel region near Vienna.
Gemischter Satz (field blend is rough translation) became recognised a wine style in 2013, the first wine in Austria to be designated as a style, rather than a region.
Among the varieties in Ingrid Groiss's Gemischter Satz are Chardonnay, Müller Thurgau, Welschriesling, Grüner Veltliner, Riesling, Grauburgunder, Pinot Blanc, Frühroter Veltliner, Neuburger, Zierfandler, Rotgipfler, Sämling, Roter Veltliner, Grauer Vöslauer, Hietl Rote, Weiße Vöslauer and Silberweiße. The soils are calcareous conglomerate.
Selective hand harvesting in October. Ten hours' maceration on the skins. Gentle pressing without stems before spontaneous fermentation. Aged on full lees in stainless steel tank until bottling.
Ingrid Groiss took over the management and winemaking of her grandmother’s vineyards, and she now makes some of the most compelling whites in the region.
Alongside oenology studies at the University of Vienna Ingrid gained practical experience working with producers such as Domäne Wachau, Birgit Braunstein and Birgit Eichinger.
Most of her vineyards are 50 years and older with many old autochthonous varieties such as Hietl Rote, Silberweisse, Weisse Vöslauer and Graue Vöslauer (varieties that were planted everywhere in Weinviertel but now nobody knows them any more).
